Immaculate Conception 2026

The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is celebrated each December 8 in the Catholic liturgical calendar. It honours the belief concerning Mary’s conception and is marked through Mass, prayer and community observances, with local forms and schedules set by each diocese. In Colombia it follows Noche de las Velitas; Lyon’s Festival of Lights also has a historical connection to this date. The countdown can help people find a parish celebration, but there is no single universal service time for every community.

Liturgical date

December 8 is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Catholic Church places it nine months before the Nativity of Mary, celebrated on September 8.

Local observances

Communities commonly hold Mass and devotional activities, but schedules depend on each parish, shrine and country. This record covers the calendar date rather than one central service or venue; check a local church schedule.

Related traditions

In Colombia, the solemnity follows the night of the Little Candles on December 7. Lyon’s light festival also retains a historical link to the Marian feast. The countdown shows how one religious date can take different forms across regions.
